Evaluation of propolis recollection methods employing plastic meshes
Main Article Content
Abstract
Propolis is a set of resinous substances collected by bees from the buds and bark of trees, transported inside the hive and modified with waxes and salivary secretions. Cuban propolis has shown to have biological effects depending on the type and richness of chemical constituents present. They have a direct correlation with other factors, such as: methods and season of the year in which they are harvested, geographical area and plant species that surround the hives. The technique used by Cuban beekeepers to harvest propolis is the traditional scraping. Unhygienic technique since propolis is obtained with greater impurities and possible contaminants. The aim of the work was to evaluate the collection of propolis using two types of plastic meshes in terms of their use for the conditions of Cuban beekeeping and to evaluate the quantity and quality of propolis harvested by using these. For this, two types of plastic meshes of different matrix were used. The study was carried out in apiaries from two western provinces of Cuba. The maneuverability with the meshes, the grams of propolis per mesh and the physical-chemical quality parameters of the collected propolis were determined. It was possible to conclude which type of mesh was more suitable for the conditions of Cuban beekeeping and the good quality and quantity of the collected propolis. This study provides the necessary knowledge to justify a technological alternative for the harvest of Cuban propolis with the highest possible quality.
